The Thessalonians were starting to believe lies about the return of Christ, thinking maybe He had already come and they had missed it, or their suffering was the wrath that was prophesied to precede His coming. Paul corrects them, explaining that the world would see two major things happen before Jesus returned: the man of lawlessness will appear and lead many people astray, and there will be apostasy, a rebellion against Christ, like never before. He exhorts the church to remain tethered to the truth and not be swayed by false teachings.
