While 1 Thessalonians was largely about Paul comforting the church of Thessalonica, 2 Thessalonians continues in a similar spirit while also adding some course-correction. He reassures the young believers that their faithfulness to the Lord amidst persecution is not in vain or unnoticed, and he corrects some false assumptions many of them had made about Christ’s future return. Through it all, Paul encourages the church to endure their temporary hardships and remain steadfast, knowing their hope is ultimately in Christ.
