As Christians in the West, the idea of being persecuted for our faith – especially to the point of death – can seem very foreign. Even for believers in the first century, it was hard to face the reality that identifying yourself with Jesus Christ might cost you everything. Yet in the face of those fears and hesitations, Peter reminds his readers that persecution for following Jesus was not only something that was predicted and should be expected, but it could also bring great gain. Addressing this issue for the fourth time in this letter, Peter provides us with eight specific promises that Christians can hold onto to anchor and embolden us for the gospel in the midst of suffering.
