Even with the warnings of Samuel that they would regret their decision, the Israelites wanted a king, so the Lord gave them what they asked for. As it had been predicted, their choice brought disaster. There were no good kings in the northern kingdom of Israel, and only a few good ones in the southern kingdom of Judah, but the Lord remained faithful. God kept His promise to David that the Messiah, the true King, would one day come from his bloodline. Throughout these accounts, we see that these flawed, human kings are an imperfect picture of the coming King, the one who cared for and provided for them, and had been with them all along.
