This July, 20 students and 4 leaders from The Well Student Ministries (WSM) are heading to New York, but this won’t be a vacation. These students won’t be spending their time seeing the sights; they’ll be seeing an entirely different side of the Big Apple.
These students will spend two weeks traveling throughout the five Burroughs of New York City. They’ll be on a serving extravaganza offering to lend a hand in soup kitchens, delivering meals to the sick, and pretty much anywhere else that needs their help. They’re working with an organization called the Center for Student Missions, an organization that coordinates experiences like these for students all year long.
Jeremiah Spears, Spiritual Formation Director for WSM, is leading the team and is excited; not only for what they will be doing, but for what God will be doing in the lives of the students who go on this trip.
“Students who go on exposure trips have an opportunity to step out of their comfort zones; to see what God is doing in other cities and other countries. It gives them a chance to join in on what God is already doing in other places. High school students are very moldable, formable. Right now, their Parents provide everything and many of them are very comfortable. For them to see something very different, it makes them realize how much God has blessed them so that they can go be a blessing to others.”
The team had only had a couple of meetings, but is coming together nicely. A couple of the students have been on an Exposure Trip before. Last year, WSM took a group of students to Ecuador. However, some are completely new and for one student, this will be their first plane ride.
The team is focused on fundraising and preparing for the emotional and spiritual journey they have ahead. Each of them will be receiving roughly $175 from the $28,000 that was collected as a special offering this past week, which is a great start, but many still have a ways to go.
As the team continues to prepare, Jeremiah asked specifically for your prayers (heck, if I were taking 20 students across the country, I’d be begging for them). Pray for those they go to serve and encourage in New York, for the leaders as they prepare with the students, and for the students themselves, that this would be a life-changing trip for them.
