Hola amigos! I’m Cait McCaffery and I am so grateful to be the blogger while we are on this adventure. We made it safely to Costa Rica! It has been a whirlwind of activity since the second we got to this beautiful country. The trip to LAX was a piece of cake thanks to Papa Mccaff (AKA Mr. McCaffery). However, upon arriving to the airport we had a slight hiccup in our itinerary…and by that I mean that I discovered my passport was in the copy machine… in Fresno. I panicked immediately, and though the team was in panic as well, they instantaneously went to prayer mode. Ludie refers to this as “talkin to Papa G”. Kat quickly found a flight from Fresno to LAX that arrived in time to make the flight to Costa Rica. My incredibly selfless mom managed to get one of the last two seats on the plane to L.A. The next few hours were filled with anxiety for all 12 of us, but the immense grace of God was wonderfully overwhelming. It brings me to tears to thing of the incredible way he provided and allowed for as all to arrive in Costa Rica in order to share Christ. The way the team came together was also unbelievable. Needless to say, we bonded quickly and refocused our attention on the trip we have been called to.
The flight itself was eventful too. We were delayed due to seatbelt replacements, and then during the trip a woman needed medical attention from doctor on board in the back galley. The landing was a bit rough but even the girls with anxiety about flying were totally fine. We wore our Love Don’t Costa Thing shirts and got many odd looks regardless of where we went. One man even asked us if we were part of a wedding! The awkward stares prepared us well for being immersed in Costa Rican culture. Here they call us gringos and gringas. Despite standing out, we are all adjusting well. Our host families are warm and welcoming. They feed us so much food it is unbelievable! Today was our first day at ministry sites and we all had a great time. We got to play and work with so many wonderful locals. The day was eventful to say the least: one of us ripped our pants, one of us used a taboo hand signal while interacting with students, and a couple of us have purchased Coke to satisfy the cravings for comforts of home and an immense caffeine addiction! The opportunity to share the light of Christ and work alongside the amazing people of SI is such a blessing and I can’t believe it has only been two days. God has already worked in miraculous ways, and we cannot wait to see what is to come in the next week and a half.
