Today is our second full day in Jarabacoa. Each day, we start our day off with a time for devotional and a teaching from a member of the SI staff. As I was walking through today's study, I was instructed to read 2 Timothy 1: 2-7. Verse 7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." This was exactly what I needed to hear on the deck of my dorm at 6:30 in the morning (which is 3:30 in California).
We missed our alarm this morning, so my whole room and I were late to the study introduction. As I was lying in bed pondering even going, I began to think, "what the heck am I even doing?!" So, this verse was precisely what I needed to hear. I needed to be reminded that God is on my side, giving me all I need, and I just need to use that to my advantage to radiate His love.
The days are long and hot, but my time spent with the Dominicans is something that is irreplaceable and so incredibly special. At my site in Mata Gorda, I enjoy the presence of 5 year olds throughout my day. One of the biggest challenges I have faced thus far is the language barrier. Speaking to the children is difficult, but the longer I'm here, the more I remember and the more I pick up. However, so far it has been the most rewarding and most God-revealing experience of my life.
