Honest Review of Dinner Table Devotions
Jackelyn Buchanan
About the author

“God has been preparing me my whole life for teaching his Word,” says Nancy Guthrie. “He has blessed me with so many sound Bible teachers to sit under—from my days as a college student in Bible classes, to amazing Sunday School teachers, Bible Study Fellowship teaching leaders, gifted pastors at my church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church —as well as teachers and preachers from all over the world that I listen to and learn from online.”
But Nancy says the most important thing God has given her is a love for him and for his Word. “To me, Gods Word is a treasure to be mined,” she says. “The deeper I go, the more I see its wisdom, the more it authenticates itself, the more it reveals to me the beauty of God’s plan to redeem all things through Christ.”
Nancy’s life experience has also significantly affected her teaching. “I’ve had to dig into God’s Word in search of answers to hard questions about God and how he works, and I find that my readers or listeners usually have the same struggles and questions. And while I share openly the deep hurts in my life, I also like to laugh. I often have people who hear me teach say that I'm very real. That’s what I want to be."
Nancy and her husband, David, have a thirty-year-old son, Matt, who works with his dad creating kids musicals for the church through Little Big Stuff Music. They also have a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, who were born with a rare genetic disorder called Zellweger Syndrome and each lived six months.
Nancy offered many of the lessons she learned from the loss of two of their children in her first book, Holding On to Hope: A Pathway of Suffering to the Heart of God which was published in 2002. Since then, Nancy has continued to write books that reflect her compassion for hurting people and her passion for applying God's Word to real life. Her desire to grow in her understanding of God's Word has prompted her to pursue graduate work in theological studies via Reformed Theological Seminary Global. She and her husband, David, host weekend Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child. She speaks regularly at conferences nationally and internationally, and is a regular contributor to The Gospel Coalition including hosting the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast.
Most recently, Nancy has been focused on her mission to infiltrate women’s Bible study in the local church with biblical theology. “I regularly have women who have worked their way through all five of my Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible Study series tell me that those studies helped them to see connections in the Bible they had never seen before. And that thrills me,” says Nancy. She wrote Even Better Than Eden to take women a step further into understanding some of the major themes than run from Genesis to Revelation in the Bible. And in the Biblical Theology Workshops for Women she is now offering around the country and internationally, she is training women how to trace these themes for themselves. “The workshops are energetic and fun and women leave telling me that their minds are spinning with all they’ve learned and their hearts are warmed by seeing Christ in new ways. Nothing could make me happier.”
Nancy and her husband, David, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee where, according to Nancy, life is less about professional pursuits than about the ordinary aspects of being a wife, mother, friend, and follower of Jesus, with clothes to wash, e-mails to answer, and a friend to listen to.

Great discussion questions but…

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2019This is just what I was looking for to read with elementary age children. They are short and quick with catchy titles. Each devotion incorporates scripture, as well as real-life examples/applications and thought-provoking discussion questions. The content is straight-forward and biblical, doesn't appear to be contaminated with any particular political or cultural ideology. Occasionally I might have a slightly different theological viewpoint than the author but this just adds to the discussion. (For a reference point, I am coming from a non-denominational, bible-believing but NOT conservative or fundamentalist Christian background.)
I would recommend for ages 7 through adult, although a highly verbal 5 or 6 year old might get something out of it too.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025We use it almost nightly at the dinner table. Definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024I love the ease of using this book. It has a main read that isn’t too long and is short, then discussion starters and other verses to look up to go along with the lesson. It got my family talking about The Word at the table which is always a blessing!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2021I read reviews before purchase Abd agree that this study is not for young children. The topics encourage discussion and are great for that and for all ages. Sometimes you just need to skip parts that done work for your situation or family. The suggested readings are helpful too for digging deeper. If you start this before dinner, your food will get cold!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024Just the right amount of information for a dinner discussion. Points brought up were unique and ways of looking at scripture that I’ve never considered.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024We are loving this book
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2015This devotional is a bit more basic and shorter than we are used to. However, the variety of questions can be used and adapted into a very profitable devotional tool that can enrich your interaction both with younger and older kids (10-18 for us). The readings are well thought out, and even when you disagree with the exposition or conclusion, there is great opportunity for discussion. Since it flows fairly quick to the questions, one can really add as necessary to the time spent in conversation and discipleship. It starts out with several quick scripture readings and then provides a related life lesson to consider. No need to worry about marking your location since it is dated for the entire year. Also, as you develop the conversation, there's room on the pages to jot down additional thoughts and questions. Great investment! No excuse now, just do it:)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2010I bought this book with the anticipation of sharing these dinner devotionals with my three sons, ages 8,13 and 16. While many devotionals are appropriate, there are several that would be more appropriate for an older audience with topics such as adultry, burning in hell, etc. So, I can't let my children automatically go to today's date and lead the devotional. Instead, I read first and verbally edit as needed. Several of my friends have this book and feel the same as I do. When the topic is kid-friendly, the book does begin great discussions, prayer and family interaction.

2.0 out of 5 stars For a very specific demographic
Our family are a mixed bag of Christians (me and my wife), very interested (my 8 year old) open (my 13 year old) and mildly interested (my 16 yr old) - the book is aimed at a family of Christians who are maybe 12+….
As much as ‘being Holy’ (24th April) is important as a Christian…the devotion simply isn’t written well enough to engage a range of ages/both believers and none.
We’ll keep trying to persevere but as far as I can see it, it’s main plus point is it might spark ideas for me and my wife to discuss with the kids…I was hoping as a family we could take it in turns to read but that’s not going to happen.
If anyone has any recommendations for others they’ve tried, pls comment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great devotional. I have kids age 3 to 15 ...
Such a great devotional. I have kids age 3 to 15 and it's good for about 5 and up. It doesn't have cutesie stories that are often hard to relate to, but has practical application writeups with great discussion questions at the end. They're also a perfect length for a before-school devotion to start the day of right.
